On account of the high weight, the requirements placed on tyres for mobile homes and motorhomes are particularly high. For this reason, "C" or "CP" tyres are used for motorhomes. "C" stands for Commercial/Cargo, "CP" for Camper. CP tyres can be driven with higher tyre pressures than C tyres. They also generally have higher overload reserves.
You can find out which tyres are the right ones for your motorhome by consulting your vehicle documentation.
Driving safely in your motorhome
Each year, around one million people in Germany spend their holidays in a motorhome or caravan. These "travel companions" have plenty of miles on the clock – therefore, checking the tyres is particularly important. Here we explain what caravanners must look out for – and what they can do during stop-offs to prevent tyre damage:
- Checking for signs of ageing is of vital importance! Infrequently used tyres age quickly: Look out for fine cracks, and replace the tyres if you notice signs of tyres becoming brittle.
- Check for visible damage! You can then check for any punctures: a foreign body that comes loose while driving can result in a sudden loss of pressure – bringing with it the risk of an accident.
- Keep an eye on your tread depth! Uneven wear is a sign of changes in the chassis geometry. In such cases, you should have the calibration checked in a specialist garage.
- Adhere to individual tyre load capacities! Do not exceed the manufacturer specifications – for this will impair manoeuvrability, and ultimately, your safety.
- Make sure you have the correct tyre pressure! If you do not heed this instruction, tyres can quickly overheat and is the worst case, you may experience a dreaded "blow out".
- Take preventative measures at an early stage! When they aren't on the road, caravanners can do a lot to prevent tyre damage. There are protective caps available that protect against UV radiation. It is also worthwhile jacking up your trailer, as this relieves the load on the tyres.
