In winter, it is essential that you are prepared for every eventuality. For car drivers, the colder season not only means that you have to watch out for snow and black ice. Storm conditions can also render the use of snow chains necessary. These are modifications for your winter tyres, which can be fitted and removed as required, without any problem. Chain links made of steel and other robust materials reinforce the tread profile, and significantly increase grip. This is most notable on ascents and descents, which would be practically impossible to pass without the use of snow chains. However, driving on slippery or muddy roads and trails is also significantly improved.
Note: Snow chains are mandatory on various roads, both at home and abroad. In particular, you must make sure to have these with you when driving on a winter holiday.
To make sure that you pick up the right snow chain, reifen.com offers a comprehensive range. When placing your order, always make sure that the snow chains fit the tyre size and satisfy your requirements. You should also check in advance whether your vehicle is suitable for the use of snow chains. In particular, caution is advised when using aluminium rims in the winter: some snow chains are designed in such a way that, in a worst case scenario, damage can occur during driving.
Fitting
Snow chains are usually fitted to the drive wheels. In the case of a vehicle with all-wheel drive, the chains are often fitted to the front tyres, as these are also responsible for the steering. In your vehicle's handbook you will find the suitable solution for your model.
Driving with snow chains
Prior to setting off, you should check whether there the vehicle has a special drive programme intended for driving with snow chains, or whether the traction control must be switched off.
Caution: in many countries, such as Germany or Switzerland, the top speed permitted with snow chains is 50 km/h. Always remain attentive while driving, and listen out for noises. As soon as it becomes loud or bumpy, you should stop and check the chain. When the roads are once again free from ice and snow, you should remove the snow chains, as otherwise the chains and the road surface will become damaged.
Care
Caring for snow chains is also particularly important. Ideally, you should rinse the snow chains thoroughly with clean water after each journey, but at least at the end of the season, and then store them dry, back in their original packaging. Depending on the model it may be possible to lubricate the snow chains - this information can be found on the manufacturer's website. You should also make sure that you cease using worn chains, unless they can be turned around. This is also stated in the user manual. As a rule, chains can also be repaired by the manufacturer or adjusted to suit other tyre dimensions.
